This sounds excellent mate, I really must get hold of this from our library. One of my favourite old novels is 'Melmoth the Wanderer' - written by Oscar Wilde's uncle or something, anyway, the Melmoth family name is connected with Wilde's. It's been a few years since I had to have this in my brain, though, so I've forgotten the details - but I remember Melmoth the Wanderer being atmospheric and quite chilling, an excellent 'horror' novel without page after page of limbs being hacked off (although there is some gore, I think). Another good one is 'The Monk' by Matthew Lewis.
