Everyone I’ve talked to about this film has complained. All the reviews I’ve read have been unsupportive, to say the least. So against popular opinion, and in the face of my regular cynical fallback position, I’m going to go right out and say: This films not bad. I didn’t think it was too long and I laughed a few times.
My brother in law puts this entirely down to Johnny Depp. I’ve got to say that those tantalising glimpses of octopus-sac you got peaking out of the back Davy Jones’s magnificently writhing tentacle head was worth the price of admission alone. This may well be Bill Nighy’s finest hour or 3. And you’ve got to admire the nerve of any director who puts his special effects team up against a lead actress whose looks and acting make her barely indistinguishable from a cod. Managing to make a whole crew of baddies look fish-like is a mammoth task at the best of times, let alone when they’re being constantly measured against Keira Knightly. The same could be said in comparison to planks of wood and Orlando Bloom.
OK – I didn’t come out of the film yo-hoing my head off like the last time, or even caring how Captain Barbossa had mysteriously returned from the dead. But measured against the entire Disney live action output to date, this still beats everything apart from Pirates episode 1. The kraken was cool too. I haven't seen a good kraken in ages.
