Spy Kids and Spy Kids 2.
Watched these with Rhi over this week, kids films are hard to rate because their audience has such different needs and expectations from mine. Sequels suck also. But hey, these are Robert Rodriguez movies, and I love he (see me waxing on about his early movies on Mark's blog in the pre-Kitty era [second para under "Saturday"]).
OK these are somewhat typical of RR movies, in that the enthusiasm he brings wins over some poor story-lining and telling, and like all RR DVDs the extras are really worth it. The "Ten Minute Film School" is reprised and is again really interesting, and Rodriguez does come across as an enthusiast, with a human touch who loves using technology (unique??).
Anyway, the second film is waaaaay better than the first (which is still OK [or "good" according to Rhi, the sequel being "excellent" despite her being full of cold]), the kids are older and act better, so there are less cringe-y bits. Both movies are comic books come to life as the 9 and 12 year old children of spies become the world's best spies themselves. Part of Rodriguez's background as a comic book creator shows here in the freedom of imagination he brings, and also it could be argued, in the slightness (or at least one-dimensionality) of the plot.
Both films are just fine for a rainy afternoon/evening with the kids (not morning though, oh no), with, as I say, the second one being actually a pretty good movie end of. They really balls-ed up with the third franchise film though which I watched ages ago, but don't seem to have reviewed, maybe it was pre-blogging? That loss of direction is a real shame though, Spy Kids 3-D went techno mad and (gulp) 3-D - a definite signpost to clunker-ville, and sullied the series - avoid that one.
Rodriguez went on to his most successful movie IMO (not self-scripted and storyboarded either, is there a connection?) Sin City after these, and his visual flair and enthusiasm really worked marvelously with Frank Miller's tales (not that I like that comic, but the film's really fine). I'm repeating myself now, so I'll stop.
Anyway, really good for kids these, and maybe the second one holds up regardless, either way good enough films from some one I really respect and rate. Sold.
