I’ve been a big fan of Guy Madden since accidentally watching Dracula: Pages from a Virgins Diary (2002) last year. I’m really desperate to see Cowards Bend the Knee, even more so since seeing Saddest… tonight at the Phoenix with Kate Denny.
The film is set in 1933, in Winnipeg, the worlds' capital of sorrow.
Isabella Rossini plays a beautiful double amputee (Lady Helen Port-Huntley) who organises a $25,000 competition to find the saddest music in the world in order to sell more beer. “If you’re sad, and like beer, then I’m your lady”.
How could this not be a great film?
Teams of musicians from all over the world compete to win the prize money in knock out rounds. Guy’s Oedipal obsession gets another airing, Lady Port-Huntley gets glass legs filled with her own beer.
